Alan McNiel’s family moved west in the 1970’s from Tennessee to a Arizona town near the White Mountain Apache Reservation. Dessert horizons featuring jagged buttes, smooth mesas and the fauna and flora of this dry climate peppered the landscape. An ancient pueblo ruin was perched on a mesa at the edge of town and red chili peppers dried in the sun on the sides of stucco houses.

In high school McNiel worked with an archaeological team excavating an early pueblo which had been abandoned for centuries. The first step was to remove rocks and earth with picks and shovels. Next, they gently removed delicate ceramic and stone artifacts with small trowels. McNiel notes that this experience has influenced every segment of his career as an artist. Although the paintings in this exhibition have more to do with impressionism and contemporary realism than archeology, McNiel’s appreciation for Pueblo ceramics is always somewhere under the surface - like foundation blocks hidden from sight.

With this series McNiel seeks to express a sense of everyday experience in the year 2015 with scenes of Montana businesses, streets, small towns and other familiar scenes. Though the urban landscapes that are the focus of his paintings are not unusual at this time, McNiel’s series documents a 21st century Montana that will someday be a fleeting memory. Perhaps these memories will serve as a catalyst for thought, a record of what has been, and a point of reflection. McNiel envisions that in a few years these common everyday pictures will be about life in the “old west.”

The body of work presented in the exhibit examines McNiel’s connection to the open spaces within a painting – the imprecise aspects and ambiguities that separate our experience of a picture from that of everyday existence. Each of the paintings relates to a story from the artist’s life where his own thoughts and observations become a part of the visual relationship to the piece. He believes the true success of a painting depends on how it relates to the thoughts, imagination and experiences of the viewer.

"Montana Triennial"

Event Dates: May 4 - August 25, 2012

Location: Missoula Art Museum

335 North Pattee
Missoula, Montana 59802
406.728.0447

A Triennial, is intended to serve as a survey exhibition of contemporary work from a particular region. The Triennial is a perfect fit for the Missoula Art Museum’s programming, whose mission states, “… strives to engage artists and audience in the creative exploration of contemporary art relevant to our community, state and region.”

Most often Triennials are selected by a respected juror or panel of jurors from outside of the region. Keith Wells, Curator of Art at Washington State University’s Museum of Art, was tapped to be this year’s juror.

Wells is no stranger to Missoula having curated the Galen Hansen exhibition at MAM in 2008 and presenting a rousing gallery talk. MAM would like to thank Keith Wells for this Herculean effort in the role of Juror for Montana Triennial 2012. Wells selected just 39 artists to be represented this year, or roughly 25% of the artists and works that were submitted.

The Second Montana Triennial is hosted at MAM, May 4 - August 25, 2012.

The exhibition will be displayed in the Carnegie, Aresty, Silvers and Shott Galleries, doubling the space and effort dedicated to this important juried exhibition. To that end, over 100 works were selected for inclusion. The exhibition was open to all artists living and working in the state of Montana, will feature work by both established and emerging artists statewide and include a variety of media. This statewide event invited artists from every corner of the state to submit and will produce a full-color catalog including the selected artists, complete with the juror's essay.

Please join the museum for the extensive programming associated with the exhibition.
